Exterior materials influence durability, maintenance, appearance, cost, and the character of a building. The right choice depends on the project—not a single universal material.

Start with performance

Consider exposure, moisture, temperature changes, maintenance requirements, expected service life, and how the material will perform at transitions and connections.

Consider the architectural character

Materials should support the proportions, massing, openings, roof form, and intended character of the building. A material that works beautifully on one project may not fit another.

Look at the whole assembly

Cladding is only one part of an exterior wall or roof assembly. Flashing, drainage, air and water control layers, insulation, trim, and detailing all contribute to performance.

Balance appearance and maintenance

Compare the desired look with cleaning, refinishing, replacement, and long-term upkeep before making a final selection.
