Home Renovation Planning Guide
A practical framework for organizing a renovation before construction begins.
Tell ATECT Architecture about your renovation.
Use the Project Planning Questionnaire to organize your property, goals, budget, timing and professional-service needs.
Define what needs to change.
Start with the goals rather than the finishes. Think about how the home works today, what is missing, and how the renovation should improve daily life.
Build your project list
- Rooms or areas being renovated
- Walls or spaces you may want to reconfigure
- Kitchen or bathroom improvements
- Storage and organization needs
- Lighting and electrical improvements
- Windows, doors or exterior changes
- Accessibility or aging-in-place considerations
- Energy or comfort improvements
Collect what already exists
Existing plans, surveys, photographs, appliance information and previous renovation records can help establish a clearer starting point. If you do not have drawings, do not let that stop the conversation.
Separate must-haves from nice-to-haves
A prioritized list helps design decisions remain connected to the project's goals. It also provides a useful framework when the scope or budget needs to change.
Consider the construction phase
Think about whether you will remain in the home during construction, whether temporary kitchen or bathroom arrangements are necessary, and whether the project will need phased construction.
Ready to discuss your renovation?
Complete the ATECT Project Planning Questionnaire with the information you have now. The first step does not require you to have every design decision made.
